Dear Friends:
Greetings and Happy New Year! I hope that you and your loved ones are well and your year is off to a great start.
I am excited to kick off the new year re-committed to #WagingJustice in new ways designed to unleash courageous action to usher in a more just and peaceful world by as many justice-hearted people as possible.
I look forward to sharing what I call “SIPO”—my own self-imposed persistent optimism. This alchemy of clear-eyed optimism mixed with courage can fuel anyone’s drive to pursue justice for all, no matter the odds. This week, I’m happy to announce my 2019 opportunities for joining forces so together we can “Build the Movement” with a sense of persistent optimism and hope.
Let me sum it up simply, truthfully, and hopefully: I believe in the genius and spirit of humanity, and I believe that our future is in our hands. Let’s join forces to advocate for bold, transformational, and common-sense solutions to the challenges of our time in the years ahead.
I am very excited to offer new pathways for my work in 2019 to “Build the Movement” by connecting deeply with people, communities, campaigns, and networks. I’m excited to work with you directly to create fun and inspiring experiences and high impact justice experiments!
There are many opportunities for each person to identify harnessing justice-hearted action within yourself, in your family, your community, and in our world. Here are some big-picture advocacy priorities that I will be pursuing:
1. Call for Rapid Climate Restoration & Transition to 100% Clean Renewable Energy
We can call for the passage of comprehensive legislation at the federal, state, and local levels to rapidly accelerate climate restoration and the rapid transition to 100% clean and renewable energy to ensure our planet is habitable for future generations and to create jobs, end poverty, upgrade infrastructure, and generate economic opportunity.
2. Call for Climate Smart Sustainable Development
We can call for bold action in support of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Accord — the world’s ambitious agendas for achieving social, economic, environmental, gender, and racial justice by 2030. We can rapidly accelerate climate-smart, sustainable development in our homes, communities, institutions, and our world to create winning lives for everyone in healthy balance with Earth.
3. Call to End Child Sexual Abuse and Incest
We can call on all parents, families, guardians, teachers, coaches, clergy, and all leaders in society to break the silence and create safe spaces for survivors to reveal and heal their hidden trauma from sexual violence. Let’s create a global and inclusive healing movement.
4. Call for Gender Equality, Universal Health Care, and the End of AIDS
We can call for gender equality, universal health care program of prevention and care for all Americans and we support global efforts to end HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other infectious disease epidemics while building global movement accelerate action toward universal health care and to protect our planetary health.
5. Call to Restore Our Democracy
We can call for major reforms of our political system to ensure fairness, freedom, and justice for all. Innovative solutions can be deployed to address low voter turnout, gerrymandering, and campaign finance rules and to combat racially-biased voter suppression and mass incarceration. We can build the movement to restore our government to be run “by the people, for the people,” instead of “by the greedy, for the greedy.”
I know this seems like a lot of priorities, but I want to let you know: I strongly believe that if we join forces, we can do it all! We can dramatically accelerate progress to achieve social, economic, environmental, racial and gender justice—in our time! Perhaps, we are the ones that we have been waiting for?
