TELL CONGRESS TO DECLARE A CLIMATE EMERGENCY NOW.
The planet is in crisis, and our leaders are asleep at the wheel. We urgently need a massive effort to reverse global warming and protect humanity and the natural world from collapse.
Now is the time for action. Now, while there is still a chance to make a real difference. Don’t wait. Send a letter to your Representative and Senator asking them to wake up and declare a climate emergency and take action that matches the scale of the emergency now, before it’s too late.
Here’s how you can respond to the Climate Emergency
Join us as we call on our representatives to co-sponsor the #ClimateEmergency Declaration introduced by Representative Ocasio-Cortez, Senator Sanders, and Representative Blumenauer.
Whether you decide to sign the petition, to visit your representative, or to organize an action, please sign up for at least one of the steps below — this moment needs all of us!
1. VISIT YOUR U.S. REPRESENTATIVE’S OFFICE THIS WEEK
Visiting your Representative’s office lets them know that climate needs to be front and center on their agenda. You can:
- Go by yourself or with a friend, and drop off a letter asking your Representative to declare a Climate Emergency. Try to get an answer from their staff about whether they will co-sponsor the Climate Emergency Declaration.
- Take photos, and try to take a short video.
- Print and share this Fact Sheet and this Frequently Asked Questions document with your Representative.
- Make sure to call your Representative’s office to follow up a couple days after your visit. Ask their staff if the Representative will sign on as a co-sponsor of the Climate Emergency Declaration.
Sign up to organize an office visit at https://tinyurl.com/VisitYourRep, and you’ll get a link where other people can RSVP to join you.
You can also find a list of office visits that have already been scheduled here, about halfway down the page. Don’t know who your U.S. Representative is? Find your representative here.
2. ORGANIZE AN ACTION IN YOUR COMMUNITY THIS WEEK
We will push our U.S. Representatives to address the Climate Emergency by organizing actions outside their offices the week of July 15.
Whether you are a group of 4 people, a group of 8 people, or a group of 100 people, we need as many actions as possible demanding that our representatives pledge their support for a Climate Emergency Declaration.
Sign up to hold an action at tinyurl.com/ClimateEmergencyAction, and you’ll get an online sign up form that people can use to RSVP.
3. TAKE ACTION WITH YOUR FAITH COMMUNITY
Are you a leader or a member of a religious or spiritual community? Are you driven by a sense of moral responsibility to join this growing movement? Do you want to learn how you can take climate action as an expression of your deepest values?
As people of faith, we are first coming together to support the national, state, and local campaigns with our partners, neighbors and fellow community members.
We are also offering a variety of ways that religious and spiritual communities can take faith-based action to help declare a Climate Emergency. For more information and helpful resources, please visit greenfaith.org/ClimateEmergency.
4. SHARE THE CAMPAIGN ON SOCIAL MEDIA
Share this piece about the campaign from the New Yorker with the message: “We are in a Climate Emergency. Join more than 7,000 people who are asking our government to respond at ClimateEmergency.US.” For more sample posts, check out our Social Media Toolkit.
5. ORGANIZE A LOCAL CLIMATE EMERGENCY CAMPAIGN
At least 18 cities and counties around the U.S. have already committed to responding to the Climate Emergency. Campaigns are under way in dozens of other localities, and many other cities need your support to get off the ground.
You can check out our Organizer Toolkit, and sign up at climatemobilization.org/chapters to connect with an existing campaign or receive information on starting a new one.
6. JOIN OUR NEXT CALL
