Use the digital power at your fingertips

As a doctor and father, I’m used to giving out advice. So bear with me, because I want to offer some simple and effective advice for my fellow activists and change-agents to tap into the digital power at your fingertips:

Use your powers for good.

And read on, because within this post we’re going to help you do exactly that! Consider this your Digital Power 101 introduction.

Class is now in session.

Taking action with a few clicks

Never before in history has such power –aka digital power–been afforded us. The telephone you hold in your hand is more powerful than the first computers I worked on at the State Department years ago. Through the digital power of social media, you can reach more people around the world than many political leaders from twenty years ago.

We all share concerns about the impact of modern digital technology. We worry about our privacy, our identities or even what others are doing with the same tools to harm others.

But we can’t run from digital tools. They spur change and help galvanize critical support for vital action. Digital power is here, for better or worse. These tools exist, so we must use them for good.

We spend a crazy amount of time on screens. Some of the latest studies found that adults view screens 11 hours a day!

A lot of that time is passive–following celebrities, posting selfies, reading or watching content others provide– that has us “tuning in and tuning out.”

What if we gave just a sliver of that time to waging justice? What if we posted for political action and used simple clicks to contact our legislators? What if we came together to use our digital power collectively go viral for justice?

Digital power through BAM 2020 campaigns

At BAM 2020 we made a significant investment in digital tools to make it far easier, more efficient and more impactful for you to make a difference–and do it fast!

Have you wondered why we’re often encouraging you to text Bam2020 to 52866? If you haven’t done it, aren’t you just a bit curious about what will happen when you do?

No, you won’t be asked for money. No, you won’t be besieged with spam in your e-mail inbox. You’ll come to this spot here:

As you can see, we’ve teed it all up for you to quickly and rapidly write a letter and tweet directly to your Congressional leader. You don’t even have to know who your leaders are, as we’ll find them for you in seconds.

By entering very basic information (none of which will be shared with anyone by BAM 2020) this sets up emails and tweets for you to send. Click another button and away they go!

Think it doesn’t matter? Well, don’t take our word for it. Try it. Click here and get started right now.  You will contact all your Congressional leaders urging them to support legislation that advances Climate Restoration to confront our growing climate emergency.

Once you’ve sent it out, wait for a day or two and see how many replies you get.

Now imagine if you invite a bunch of friends to do the same? Imagine the next happy hour when you’re sitting around talking about your frustration with the lack of political action or solutions, you encourage everyone to do something about it, right then and there, with a cocktail or beer in hand!

That’s called using your digital power for good.

If 20-30 or 200-300 emails like this show up, your political representatives will take notice. We can quickly and effectively raise this important solution to our climate emergency with those in a position to affect legislation and change.

We’re stronger together

Over the course of the next month, we’ll have several calls to action. You can do EVERY one of them, just as easily as you do this first one. You can keep making an impact, keep raising your voice, keep waging justice with a few clicks on your phone.

And don’t forget the power in your own posts. How many people liked or commented on your latest selfie? What if they saw a post from you showing a letter from your senator about climate restoration instead? What if they liked, commented and shared your posts about taking action to defend the Earth for generations to come?

It’s simply too easy NOT to do it.

Tap into your digital power (super power!) Get started today.

  1. Support Climate Restoration here.
  2. Share your post using our social media links.
  3. Drop me a note and introduce yourself, saying “I’m waging justice!”

This is how we will change the world together!

Avoid extinction through climate restoration

Humanity, we have a problem. We are staring at our very own extinction. That’s what I call a big problem. But we have a big solution: climate restoration.

You might not have heard it put in these terms, but we humans are on the verge of polluting ourselves out of existence. The last climate conference I attended, a climate expert said that 4–5 billion people could die in the next decades and we may all go extinct.

Sounds bleak, right? But there is great news, too. These problems are entirely solvable! But first we need to understand the gravity of the situation if we don’t act.

The Sixth Mass Extinction

The sixth mass extinction is underway and scientists report that the climate emergency is spiraling out of control — imminently threatening our humanity.

First, we lost countless sea-dwelling anaerobic bacteria who could not survive in oxygen.

Now we are losing Arctic Ice and 1000s of species are going extinct.

We’re seeing daily impacts on human lives and living conditions from monster storms to raging fires

The fact is we’re in danger of losing all of humanity. All of the humans. All of us.

The clock is ticking.

This problem, even though so many of us want to deny it, isn’t going away.

That’s the bad news.

So, let’s get to the good news.

We can work together to restore a safe and healthy climate for all of humanity now and for future generations. Through climate restoration we can return our Earth to the safe home for us all it was intended to be.

Climate Restoration Emergency Action

We have a solution!

Worldwide “Climate Restoration Emergency Action (CREA)” can ensure that humanity can survive on Earth for generations.

We must return atmospheric CO2 to safe pre-industrial levels by 2030 and restore Arctic ice to prevent permafrost melt and the resulting disastrous methane emissions.

Climate restoration won’t be easy — in fact, it will be the most challenging endeavor humanity has ever undertaken — but it can and urgently must be done, as fast as possible.

On MLK Day earlier this year, I launched Build A Movement 2020 (#BAM2020) to spark a patriotic revolutionary political movement.

My goal is to mobilize all Americans to join together in a shared commitment to take urgent “Climate Restoration Emergency Action” to restore a safe and healthy climate to ensure the survival of humanity, for ourselves and for future generations.

I am committed to mobilizing the full capabilities of our American society and all of our global partnerships: the federal government, local governments, universities, academics, civic groups, faith-based groups, and the private sector.

Everyone everywhere is urgently needed to deploy “Climate Restoration Emergency Action.”

We must insist that the President of the United States, Congress, and local governments take “Climate Restoration Emergency Action.”

If they are not willing to do this, I believe they are violating their oath to uphold our Constitution and they should be removed from office as fast as possible.

I am committed to demanding that our elected officials in federal, state, county, and city governments launch “Climate Restoration Emergency Action.”

You can take action immediately by texting BAM2020 to 52866. Within less than a minute you can email you legislators and tweet support for CREA.

We can stop our own extinction with simple clicks of action.

As Winston Churchill said, “Nothing matters except victory in the existential struggle.“

CREA for a Better World

Just what is CREA and why am I writing about it about so often?

It’s a good question, one I’ll answer in this post. But first, let me ask you a question: Did you happen to catch the World Series?

Of course, as a resident in the Washington, D.C. area I couldn’t avoid it. The city was galvanized by a baseball team winning it all against all odds. It was fun and brought a lot of good cheer.

But it’s still a game.

What if the entire city of Washington, D.C. came together to win the biggest battle facing humanity today? What if the entire country could be on the same team, working with others around the world to ensure this miraculous blue, green ball of life keeps on providing a safe and secure home for humanity for generations to come?

Now that would be a celebration, right?

Well, that’s exactly what we’re going to do. I know this because earlier in my career the world faces another perilous threat. The AIDS epidemic was spreading around the world killing millions. We needed a collaborative, innovative, large-scale effort to alter the course of the disease.

And we did it. In the process, we saved 32 million lives!

So here we go again. We’re going to save humanity, and we’re going to do it by securing large-scale support for CREA.

CREA: a bold solution for a critical problem

For the past several months I’ve had the privilege to work as a senior policy advisor with the Foundation for Climate Restoration who is leading the global effort on Climate Restoration Emergency Action, or CREA.

We can return atmospheric CO2 to safe pre-industrial levels by 2030 and restore Arctic ice to prevent permafrost melt and the resulting disastrous methane emissions. Climate restoration legislation and investment will remove carbon from the air, spur clean energy investment and help reverse the impacts of climate change.

Climate Restoration is the global endeavor to return the Earth’s climate systems to a proven safe state in which humanity and our natural world evolved.

Climate restoration won’t be easy — in fact, it will be the most challenging endeavor humanity has ever undertaken — but it can and urgently must be done, as fast as possible.

A Vision for Impact in 2020

Eight billion people call this planet home.

Each of us, every one of us, faces existential challenges that don’t discriminate by politics, race, religion or wealth. We’re in this together.

We’re also in a time of globalization and digitalization. Solutions are at our fingertips. One person can make a greater impact than ever before.

This is our world. Together we can save it.

The Build a Movement 2020 mission is to bring together political movement, organizations and individuals to heal America and ensure our country advances solutions that protect our world and ensure the survival of all humanity.

Today, we turn the calendar. We are now 364 days away from the next election of the President and Congress. We have just one year to impact this election and ensure accountability in 2021 and beyond.

Over the next two months our vision for 2020 and how we’ll catalyze a movement of change.

At Build a Movement 2020:

  • We call for the restoration of democracy.
  • We call for climate restoration.
  • We call for a sustainable future.
  • We call for gender equality and universal health care.
  • We call for the end of childhood sexual abuse and trauma that stems from inequalities, racism and gun violence.

Text BAM2020 to 52886 and take the pledge to build a movement in 2020.

Step 7- Mobilize for the future This is not a one-time effort

A march is an event. It’s a rallying point. It’s a start. But it’s not the solution. To be effective, even a march with millions of people all filling the streets in every region of the world, must to into a movement.

And a movement can’t happen without you.

Building a Movement 2020 is this movement, one where justice-hearted people are joining forces, in a fusion of solidarity for the purpose of making the impossible, possible. Build A Movement 2020 can usher in a more just and peaceful world.

We are committed to ensuring that the next U.S. President and Congress shares our commitment to critical steps change. We are committed to holding the next U.S. government accountable for bold and transformative action.

Our movement platform centers around five resolute pillars, each with a clarion call to action.

BAM 2020’s five pillars are:

CLIMATE RESTORATION: We call FOR RAPID CLIMATE RESTORATION and TRANSITION TO 100% CLEAN RENEWABLE ENERGY to ensure our planet is habital for future generations. Investments in clean energy will create jobs, upgrade our infrastructure and generate economic opportunity while confronting our current climate emergency.

SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT: We call for the U.S. to join the rest of the world with a commitment to bold action in support of the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) and the “Paris Climate Accord” — the world’s ambitious agendas for achieving social, economic, environmental, gender and racial justice by 2030.

ENDING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE: We call on all parents, families, guardians, teachers, coaches, clergy, and leaders in society, to break the code of silence regarding sexual abuse and incest. We call on these individuals to create safe spaces for survivors and to assist them in revealing as well as healing from their hidden trauma. Together, we will create a global and inclusive healing movement.

HEALTH AND GENDER EQUALITY: We call for gender equality, mental health programs, universal health care programs of prevention, and universal care for all Americans. Furthermore,  we call for the support of global efforts to end HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and other infectious disease epidemics.

RESTORE DEMOCRACY: We call for major reforms of our political system to ensure fairness, freedom, and justice for all. We call for innovative solutions that can be deployed to address low voter turnout, gerrymandering, and campaign finance rules.  Additionally, we also call for the deployment of solutions that will assist in the combating of firearms violence, racially-biased voter suppression, and mass incarceration.

On Sept 19, we joined the world to march for climate justice. Now, we ask you to join us in our continued movement toward justice for all. We will “Build a Movement 2020” to restore our government being run “by the people, for the people,” instead of  “by the greedy, for the greedy.”

Join us today. Click here to take action.

Step 6- Advance modern solutions: invest in climate restoration

For far too long protecting the planet has been pitched in a false war against economic vitality.

For far too long we’ve been led to believe that the only way for us to cool the planet is to bankrupt it.

And for far too long, we’ve watched greed wage war on the planet, pushing us toward a mass extinction of all humanity, simply to wring MORE money which it turns out will is hastening our collective demise.

Greed could well be the single greatest obstacle remaining to a worldwide effort to reverse the warming planet and save it. As teen activist Greta Thunberg said at the UN Climate Action Summit, “We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairy tales about eternal economic growth,” she said. “How dare you?”

As a recent article in Vice pointed out, the climate emergency is not just about the eventual demise of Planet Earth–as if that isn’t sufficient motivation for concerted global action– but the imminent demise of capitalism as we know it.

“A climate change-fueled switch away from fossil fuels means the worldwide economy will fundamentally need to change,” the article stated.

This all sounds rather bleak, but perhaps it’s darkest before the dawn. The path toward ending this climate emergency through climate restoration is one that combines modern technology and clean energy economic investments that, A) Ensures the survival of humanity, and B) ensures the flourishing of humanity through sustainable development investments to usher in a healthy and just way of living together.

Here is how we will go from a #MarchToAMovement in 7 Steps:

Step 6- Advance modern solutions

Imagine that? It can be a win-win. Maybe not WIN-AT-ALL-COSTS for the greedy, but still an economic and environmental win.

Need further proof? How does $47 Trillion sound? That’s how much the biggest bankers in the world have already committed to divert from fossil fuel investment into clean energy. If they believe it’s a better investment, than why shouldn’t we rapidly transition renewable energy?

In the simplest terms, Climate Restoration offers available solutions to reverse the damage already underway and remove gigatons of CO2 from the atmosphere.  We can do this now with carbon-negative building materials and rapid acceleration of ocean ecosystem restoration. We have to pull the carbon from the air where it won’t continue to heat our planet.  To learn more about the best approached here is a recently published Climate Restoration White Paper published in September 2019 by the Foundation for Climate Restoration

Investment from both private and public institutions will launch climate restoration technologies and begin the work of restoring our climate, So here we are, STEP 6 on our Roadmap from a March to a Movement. It’s the “big tent” of this plan if there ever was one.

Come one, come all. Let’s work together.

Step 4- Unleash political courage: Commit to climate restoration

Millions marched.

Now trillions are being reallocated to a UN-backed “responsible banking” pledge that will fight climate change by shifting investments away from fossil fuels.

UN Secretary General António Guterres told us at the Climate Summit in New York this week that these are not unrelated events.

“Recent action by some countries and businesses, as well as the stunning rise of the youth climate movement, gave him hope that international goals to avoid catastrophic global heating could be met,” The Guardian reported

This is how you turn a march into a movement. Even Politico is paying attention. In its “UN Climate Summit Playbook” of Sept 23, it tabbed the Foundation for Climate Restoration’s White Paper as a BIG IDEA for change. As a Senior Policy Advisor for this effort, I couldn’t be more pleased with the traction we’re getting.

Simply put, the world is listening.

Candidates lagging

Well, most of it is anyway. Guterres noted the absence of support from the U.S., China, Australia and Brazil, countries with a long history as part of the problem, not the solution. Which is exactly why we are building a movement right here in the United States leading up to the election in 2020. Because, for all the talk about this climate emergency, our country’s leaders are not doing nearly enough. The status quo is no longer acceptable.

Take a look:

Guterres told us that the world is not on track to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or the Paris climate agreement; If we maintain our current pace we will only be halfway there by 2030. Halfway during a global climate emergency is not good enough.

So why aren’t more candidates on board? Because political will has long taken precedence over political strides, and even with ambitious ideas from many of the Democratic candidates, fear over the politics of Climate Restoration remains a serious obstacle.

“Only three of the top ten candidates — Pete Buttigieg, Amy Klobuchar, and Andrew Yang — are explicitly calling to invest in technology (to remove carbon from the atmosphere), despite the fact that many experts believe limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) depends on it,” said a report by The Grist

This represents a serious obstacle to the United States full-scale engagement in Climate Restoration that is absolutely essential.

Courage over fear

Fear has long held back politicians. There is nothing new there. But how do we push them past the fear? We insist. This is step 4 of our roadmap from a march to movement.

STEP 4: Unleash Political Courage.

In case you missed them, here are the first three steps:

STEP 1: Forge systemic change:

STEP 2: Demand More:

STEP 3: Consolidate our Focus:

Politicians may not do as much as we’d expect or like, but they do listen. They are hearing us now. They saw us out in the streets. They are seeing how young people all over the country are engaged and insistent.

That’s why we must Build a Movement 2020. We must be large enough and loud enough to break the political fear against Climate Restoration and ensure proper legislation is enacted. Our BIG IDEA must become a plan of action.

Let’s take our march online today. Here are two simple steps you can do to help break the political fear.

  1. Write every candidate for president from both parties and insist they support Climate Restoration.
  2. Share this post on your social networks and invite everyone you know to text BAM2020 to 52866 and join this movement.

Let’s break the fear and push to solutions. Humanity depends on it.

Step 2-Demand more: Our candidates aren’t passing the exam yet

In an amazing shift of political will, all the major Democratic candidates for president have addressed climate change as a leading issue of their strategy and policy. Most 2020 presidential candidates agree we face a “climate emergency” and have plans to achieve net-zero carbon emissions to slow global warming.

A seven-hour forum on CNN allowed for substantive conversation from the candidates. Other town hall-like forums on major networks have given prominent exposure to the candidates’ plan to curb global warming.

This is remarkable. It encourages us as we keep marching for climate justice. It propels us to believe that change can and will occur.

But… BUT, did you know that according to Build a Movement 2020’s climate restoration scorecard, not a single candidate for president has earned a grade above a C yet?

It’s just not enough. Not because we say so, but because leading experts and scientists all over the world agree that curbing emissions and planting trees to absorb carbon is critical, it is not enough!

Our second step toward lasting change is to insist our candidates embrace bold Climate Restoration solutions that are urgently needed to reverse global warming and restore a healthy climate.

Here was Step 1: Forge systemic change

Now we move to Step 2: We must demand more!

BAM2020 and ClimateChangesEverything.org recently released the first CREA 2020 Presidential Candidates Report Card. Sadly, none of the leading candidates are yet demonstrating leadership on Climate Restoration.

Humanity faces an imminent threat. A cascade of climate feedback loops is rapidly pushing Earth into a hothouse state, threatening the survival of humanity in this century.

As Greta Thurnberg said to Senate Democrats this week, “I know you’re trying, but just not hard enough.”

Listen to Greta’s clear thoughts on progress with Trevor Noah here:

We call on presidential candidates to make clear commitments to Climate Restoration.

We demand that our leaders commit to a restoration-scale drawdown of CO2 and Arctic ice restoration.

To ensure that all of humanity can survive and flourish for generations, we need Climate Restoration Emergency Action (CREA), a massive mobilization–larger and faster than the World War II efforts.

Step 2 is already underway. We won’t back down until it is realized and we need your voice. Join us today by texting BAM2020 to 52866.

 Step 1: Forge systemic change

It felt like change, didn’t it?

Out in the streets, marching for climate justice, seeing the worldwide response of a global movement rise up, you felt the time for serious, sustainable, history-making change has arrived.

But let’s be clear: Yesterday’s Global Climate Strikes were the start. It’s a long road ahead. That’s why climate marches will continue all week. Keep stepping. Keep posting. Keep sharing. Keep demanding our political leaders take action. Keep taking action

In the simplest terms, we march for our survival. We’re marching to build a movement of change.

Seven Steps to Change

Over the next week of marching for climate justice, we will offer seven steps for decisive, collaborative and impactful action. Seven clear answers to what we want, what we need and what will bring effective lasting change.

The threat of a warming planet has been documented for years. In 2015, 198 countries agreed at the COP 21 in Paris to work toward the reduction of carbon emissions.

Yet every meaningful statistic since shows we’re not doing enough, fast enough, to ensure the survival of humanity on planet Earth, and we can restore a healthy climate and flourish for generations to come.

Listen to Katie Eder as she calls for bold action to #RestoreTheClimate.

We can be bold. We can make do this.

How? In seven bold steps we can take together:

STEP 1: We must forge a coalition for systemic change.

I’ve worked on social and political movements in the past. I’ve seen historical shifts because of this work. As a physician working to curb the global AIDS epidemics decades ago, I learned a lot about how to create lasting change against a seemingly insurmountable obstacle.

So much of our efforts early on in the AIDS epidemic was failing. We were too scattered. There were too many small efforts all recognizing the threat of AIDS and its global impact on millions. It took a collaborative effort–a movement. When we created the Global AIDS Alliance it coalesced a large number of stakeholder groups to align behind a common strategy. The result was a historic shift in forever altering the course of the AIDS epidemic, as I wrote about in my book, Waging Justice: A Doctor’s Journey to Speak Truth and Be Bold

The intensities of climate impact in recent years (and even more urgently in recent weeks) have helped us elevate the reality of climate threat in a way that hasn’t occurred before, despite many years of growing environmental consciousness. The full weight of this impact is dramatically changing. The tipping point for change has arrived.

Changing a march into a movement

For decades our scattershot approach to climate change has helped raise consciousness, but it hasn’t yet altered the course of our warming planet sufficient to remove the perilous threat to humanity.

Together… united… undeterred and undivided, we can create a movement that will bring the radical change necessary at this point in history. My work for the last 30 years has been to hold governments accountable. I’ve been waging justice and I want you to join me. I launched Build A Movement 2020 (#BAM2020) to spark a movement for justice. Click here and join the movement today.

Today a march, tomorrow the movement for political action

The next generation is leading us today. Around the world young people are standing together, urging us all toward a new mindset that is crucial for altering the course of climate change.

The Global Climate Strike has begun.

They marched in the Pacific Islands where their entire way of life is under immediate threat. Massive marches in Australia started the crescendo around the world, soon joined by similar marches all across Asia.

They marched in Europe, from the U.K. to Germany to Rome and beyond

The strikes continue today, now, here in the U.S, right here in New York at the UN meetings, and then spreading out across the country.

This collaboration of global support sends a powerful message to world leaders leading up to the UN Climate Summit in New York starting tomorrow.

Across America today these marches continue in thousands of communities. This is a Collaboration of The Determined, if you will, people who will no longer accept doing nothing while our planet burns. As we march, we also put massive pressure on our political leaders to take action. We must be clear that this is the start of a movement, not the end of an event.

It is up to us to use this energy to build a movement that will powerfully shape the election of our country’s leaders in 2020. We have 409 days and counting to create this movement of transformation leading up to the election on November 3, 2020.

Climate restoration won’t be easy by any stretch of the imagination. But it can be achievable as was discussed earlier this week at the Climate Restoration Forum at the UN headquarters.

We can demand bold action in Congress and hold the next president accountable. We will continue to track the candidates’ movement on climate restoration so the public can make informed decisions about how the next president will address the urgency of saving our planet.

Over the next seven days, we will offer seven firm steps forward that will help turn this Climate Strike into a movement of sweeping change.

Today we march for justice and build a movement. Tomorrow and every day going forward, we demand bold action from our political leaders. Because as Greta Thurnberg told Senate leaders, “Sorry, you’re not trying hard enough.” (We think they can do a lot more as they are not passing our Climate Restoration report card, as of yet). Let’s build a movement. Join us.
