Trump, Pelosi, Roberts, Congress Fail to Uphold their Oath of Office

Heated: Trump’s Magical Mystery Climate Solutions

Let’s get to the root of what we may expect tomorrow during the State of the Union. I put out my statement yesterday that called for climate leaders to be ready for a GOP pivot. Heated came out with a new story on these comments.

Here’s a snippet:

It’s tempting, and perhaps wise, to think that Trump was just making stuff up—that actually, we won’t “be hearing about” any unbelievable “answer” or technology to address the climate crisis from the Trump administration any time soon.

But Paul Zeitz, a senior policy adviser for the Foundation for Climate Restoration and co-founder of Build a Movement 2020, doesn’t think that’s true.

The “things” Zeitz thinks Trump is specifically talking about are climate restoration technologies—that is, technologies to restore the climate to the way it was before humans started pumping carbon into the atmosphere. Climate restoration technologies include things as simple as planting trees, and as complicated as using sand-like sprays to thicken rapidly melting ice sheets. The latter is a technology already used by the oil industry.

“Our analysis of [Trump’s] statements … confirmed by other contacts, and our interpretation of the political moment we are in, indicate that there is strong likelihood that new [climate restoration] commitments will be made by President Trump during his State of the Union address on Tuesday, February 4, 2020,” Zeitz said in an email.

WASHINGTON, Feb. 1, 2020 /PRNewswire/ — Washington insiders are chattering that President Donald Trump may unexpectedly propose new climate investments in his upcoming State of the Union speech to surprise voters and shock world leaders. This climate announcement would be a significant shift for the administration.

“Everyone in the cross-partisan climate restoration movement agrees that the three pillars of climate action–Restoration, Adaptation, and Mitigation (RAM)–is the only right way to move forward,” says Dr. Paul Zeitz, Co-Founder of Build a Movement 2020.

“I hope Trump does commit to take action on climate, and we’ll be watching closely. As a doctor, I swore an oath, ‘First, do no harm.” So I’ll do everything possible to ensure that Trump does NO MORE HARM to our planet. So far, his disturbing approaches are threatening efforts to return to a proven safe and healthy climate that could ensure the survival of humanity for future generations.”

Indications of Trump’s pivot on climate action came last week at the World Economic Forum in Davos, when Trump claimed he is not a climate change denier, even as he repudiated environmental activists as “heirs of yesterday’s foolish fortune tellers,” and “perennial prophets of doom.”

But then he signed on to the One Trillion Trees initiative–alongside the United Nations Environment Programme–to restore a trillion trees on earth by 2050 as a natural solution to reduce atmospheric CO2.

“I now believe it’s very possible that Trump will announce investment in both natural and technological climate solutions on land and potentially in the oceans,” says Zeitz. “We don’t know if what Trump proposes will be safe and effective, so we are calling on world leaders to establish strong guardrails against unilateral action that could do more harm than good.”

“Additionally, we don’t know if Trump will prioritize Arctic ice restoration, which is my top priority, to reduce the risk of catastrophic methane releases which could trigger a human extinction event in the next 2-15 years,” says Zeitz.

Zeitz cautions that humanity has no time to lose. But the good news is that there are solutions available to fix the problem. Investors and asset managers are moving away from fossil fuels, and eyeing up to $8 trillion dollars per year market opportunities in climate restoration.

What is Climate Restoration? It means returning the Earth’s climate systems to a proven safe and healthy state. This requires bringing atmospheric CO2 to proven safe levels of less than 300 parts per million (PPM) and restoring sufficient Arctic ice to prevent permafrost melt and the resulting disastrous methane emissions.

The Day the We Take Action for Good

If you’re like me you’re following the presidential candidates, the impeachment proceedings and the flurry of news coming out of Washington with a high degree of wariness. It’s noisy and disturbing and eventually, we go a bit numb.

For example, there was only one question in this week’s Democratic Presidential Candidates’ Debate on climate change.

We must break through the noise because there is great news coming out of the effort to not only slow global warming but to actually restore the Earth to a healthy habitat for generations to come. 

To accomplish this ambitious, yet absolutely necessary goal, we must elect a President in 2020 that will lead Climate Restoration Emergency Action (CREA). And so far, the entire slate of candidates are coming up short. Take a look: 

Democratic voters in Iowa and around the country should be alarmed by the lack of ambition to address climate change by the Presidential candidates. All of the candidates are failing to respond adequately to our climate emergency. We need more than rhetoric and empty promises. Climate Restoration Emergency Action (CREA) won’t be easy by any stretch of the imagination. Yet with bold leadership, it’s affordable and achievable. CREA is a bold, whole-of-government and global effort to catalyze a fast transition to a net-zero carbon economy by 2030, massive carbon dioxide removal, and climate restoration by 2050– thereby ensuring the survival of humanity and our natural world.

Seeking A+ Presidential Candidates on Climate Restoration

This week we learn more about our presidential candidates, but will learn more about these candidates and their commitment to Climate Restoration? 

Based on the last debate, no. In fact, there was not a single question on climate change over the course of a two-hour debate on October 15.  But as Axios reported, the backlash on social media, even from some of the candidates themselves, elevated the issue after the debate.

We can hope this Democratic debate hosted by the Washington Post will be different. 

But hope isn’t enough. Action is critical.

That’s not good enough.  

C+ won’t solve this climate emergency. Climate questions must dominate the debate stage. Candidates with bold plans that will actually solve the climate emergency and restore our planet’s health must emerge before we vote.

A Climate Emergency, but where are the alarms?

Friday night out means something very different than you’d expect for eighty-one-year-old celebrity and activist Jane Fonda. The superstar has pledged to get arrested by taking part in Fire Drill Fridays every week through January to raise awareness about the climate emergency our planet now faces. 

She’s already been arrested several times in Washington, D.C.

Because of the urgency of our climate emergency, I have centered my first action and highest priority as the founder of Build a Movement 2020 on building a collaborative effort around Climate Restoration. 

Over the past month, a global movement for Climate Restoration is gaining momentum to ensure the survival and flourishing of humanity with an ambitious goal to restore a safe and healthy climate by 2050.

In September we held the First Annual Global Climate Restoration Forum

Hundreds of people from around the world attended the event at the UN Trusteeship Council with support from the UN Office for Partnerships and in partnership with Earth Day Network, Future Coalition, and the Foundation for Climate Restoration.

In tandem with the Forum, we announced the launch of the Global Coalition for Climate Restoration public and private partners focused on large-scale carbon dioxide removal, Arctic ice restoration, and/or ocean ecosystem restoration. Many organizations are joining the effort as we speak. 

This type of collaboration is critical for meaningful change. We can ensure the survival of humans (or ensure Earth is livable for all humans) but only when we work together!

Our next President must save humanity

Our next President must be prepared to save humanity. In the face of a climate emergency that impacts every aspect of our lives, half-measures and plodding steps will not be sufficient. And we have just over 350 days to impact the election with this critical goal.

An effort to save humanity probably sounds extreme. But the science is clear: We are running out of time. Equally clear is that there are options for climate restoration that can do the job. We can save humanity.

This election cycle has focused more attention on climate justice than ever before. Several candidates are calling for a climate emergency. Several are offering bold ideas. But none yet has broken to the top of the field, according to our newly released Climate Restoration Emergency Action Scorecard.

Democratic voters in Iowa and around the country should be alarmed by the lack of ambition to address climate change by the Presidential candidates.

Ensure our next President helps save humanity

Our next President must also go beyond current ambitions for climate action. 

Besides ongoing mitigation (reducing CO2 emissions) and adaptation (preparing for inevitable consequences), the next President must set a new goal to achieve “climate restoration” — to repair the current damage and proactively ensure a safe and healthy climate for future generations.

The next President must mobilize the full capabilities of the federal government, universities, and the private sector to deploy innovative solutions to return atmospheric CO2 to safe levels of less than 300 parts per million by 2050. 

In addition, efforts must restore sufficient Arctic ice for eight months of the year to prevent permafrost melt and the resulting disastrous methane emissions. This is an urgent priority.

So far, none of the candidates have committed to this goal.

The next president must lead the rapid acceleration of the three legs of climate action: mitigation, adaptation, and restoration. This will require mobilizing the entire federal government and society on a scale not seen since Americans mobilized to win the battle against fascism in World War II.

So far, none of the candidates have committed to this goal.

Our next President must unify a broad range of constituencies within the Democratic party and demonstrate their skill to mobilize cross-partisan support that attracts Independents, green Republicans, and especially non-voting Americans. A unified political movement is an absolute prerequisite for breaking the political logjam to accelerate federal climate action.

So far, none of the candidates have committed to this goal.

Our greatest presidents have called on shared sacrifice to accomplish broad goals like winning World War II and ensuring “government of the people, by the people and for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” 

A new president’s mission is a little more succinct: to ensure people shall not perish from the earth. The top agenda must be to save humanity.

Let’s join forces with all Americans and vigorously demand action to restore our climate.
